Carol Smith

Founding Director and Management Committee Member

carolI was born in Cape Town, and have lived in Namibia, Canada and the UK. I studied at Barkly House College of Education (Pre-Primary), UNISA (Remedial) and UCT (MPhil). I am passionate about equality and social justice. I have worked as a teacher, trainer, field worker and researcher in Early Childhood Development and training programmes since 1979. I taught at Thlabane College, North West Province, and the Good Hope College of Education, Khayelitsha. I was an education advisor for five years at Grassroots Educare Trust, Cape Town.

From 1993 to 1999 I worked at the Early Learning Resource Unit (ELRU), doing research and in their anti-bias project. I was inspired by Helen Robb and others in the anti-bias project. During a five-year stay in the UK I became intrigued by the Persona Doll approach. I worked with Babette Brown, a South African exile, anti-racism practitioner and founder of Persona Doll Training (UK), providing training across the UK, in New Zealand, Iceland, India and Germany. On my return to South Africa, I founded Persona Doll Training (SA). I am a member of the Management Committee and served as the Director of the organisation until June 2017.
